Is this a gift-appropriate book, or does it look too "educational"?

Full colour, 48 pages, with proper illustration throughout by Fiona Barden — it reads and feels like a proper storybook first, with the learning woven in rather than presented as a workbook or textbook. Will my child be able to actually use this in a real situation, or is it just theory?
